New Year School Opens

How to ensure that Ghana?s current economic gains are reflected in the people?s pockets is the task this year?s New Year School, which opened yesterday, has set itself.

The 56th New Year School is themed, ?Wealth creation for accelerated national development: Imperatives and Challenges.

Organised by the Institute of Adult Education of the University of Ghana, the annual school provides a platform for Ghanaians to dispassionately discuss issues of national concern and to recommend ways of addressing them for national growth.

The week-long school is being attended by more than 180 participants, including traditional and opinion leaders, Members of Parliament, chief executives, managers and senior public officials and private sector entrepreneurs.

Giving the history of the New Year School, Mr R.A. Aggor, acting Director of the Institute, said it was first held in 1949, a year after the establishment of the Institute, when it was located at Komenda in the Central Region, to give people outside academia the opportunity to contribute to issues bordering on national socio-economic growth.

At the end of its deliberation, the school makes recommendations to the government and other relevant institutions to assist in addressing pertinent national development concerns.
