Communities cautioned against disposing of plastic waste in water-bodies

Tapa-Abotoase, Dec. 16, GNA – Mr Ignatius Mintah, Presiding Member of the Jasikan District Assembly has asked people living near water-bodies to desist from disposing of plastic wastes into such water-bodies.

He said such bad practices inhibit the free flow of rivers and streams thereby resulting in floods and death of marine life. Mr Mintah was speaking at the launch of Fourth Volta Regional Clean Community Competition at Tapa-Abotoase in the Jasikan District under the theme: “Aquatic Debris: Threat to Man’s Survival”.

He expressed regret that: “In our quest for better socio-economic conditions we often interfere with the natural order of things thus causing damages to them to our own detriment.”

Mr Mintah said the indiscriminate use of poisonous chemicals for fishing also constituted a serious threat to aquatic life.

Mr Mintah warned that anyone who would contravene the laws on bush burning in the District this Harmattan season would be prosecuted. Earlier school children paraded the principal streets carrying placards some of which read: “Keep litter bins in your homes” and “Bring back your refuse from your fishing expedition”.
