League commends GAC on World AIDS Day

Accra, Nov. 29, GNA – The League of HIV/AIDS Reporters, Ghana, a non-governmental organisation of journalists engaged in the reportage on HIV/AIDS issues, has commended the Ghana AIDS Commission (GAC) and all stakeholders for their untiring effort in the fight against the pandemic.

A statement issued in Accra on Monday and signed by Mr. Ato Amoaning-Annan, President of the League, said as Ghana celebrates this year’s World AIDS Day, the association shares the Commission’s concerns over the steady trend of 50 percent increases in the HIV prevalence rate from 2.3 percent in 2001 to 3.4 percent in 2002 and 3.6 percent in 2003. It said it is particularly worry about revelations that some communities in Ghana had five percent prevalence rate.

The League called for the redoubling of efforts nationwide at achieving the objective of the national response.

It proposed that the fight against HIV/AIDS should be aimed at freeing Ghanaians entirely from its spread through open discussions, continuous review of intervention strategies and continuous education at all levels.

“Everything should be done to make room for the free supply of anti-retroviral drugs,” it said adding that, the current situation in which only about two percent of 70,000 infected persons who required the drugs had access to them is a “no win prospect”. 30 Nov. 04
