Takoradi–Agona Nkwanta road set for early November handover as safety concerns grow

Work on the 25-kilometre Takoradi–Agona Nkwanta dual carriageway is close to completion, with contractor JUSTMOH Construction Limited expecting to hand over the project by the end of November 2026.

That would be more than three months ahead of the original schedule.

JUSTMOH Construction Limited Chief Executive Officer Justice Amoh said the main structural work had been completed, including the concrete bridges and roundabout. Only about five days of asphalt overlay work remained across the route.

Residents raise pedestrian safety concerns

While motorists have welcomed the progress, people in Aboade and nearby communities remain concerned about vehicles travelling at speed and the risks faced by pedestrians.

Some residents have placed mooring ropes across parts of the road in an effort to force drivers to slow down.

The Chief of Aboade, Nana Etsin Kofi II, said about five people had been hit and killed by vehicles since construction began.

“Since the project started, about five people have been knocked down and killed. Just recently, a school kid was run over by a vehicle,” he said.

His comments reflect concern among residents about how they will cross the road now that asphalt has been laid through the community.

Mr Amoh urged residents to remove the mooring ropes, warning that they could create additional danger for motorists and other road users.

He said the Ministry of Roads and Highways had approved seven footbridges for the route, with work expected to start shortly after the main road project was handed over.

“On the entire stretch, we have seven footbridges approved by the Ministry [of Roads and Highways] for us to install. We are currently working on them,” he said.

The contractor also said road signs and other safety measures would be completed as part of the project.

Motorists using the Takoradi–Agona Nkwanta road have expressed satisfaction with the pace of construction. They expect the opening of every section of the route to improve traffic movement along the corridor once the handover takes place.

For residents of Aboade, however, the completion of the road has not removed concerns over pedestrian safety. They are now waiting for the promised footbridges to provide safer crossing points.
