La General Hospital project gathers pace as residents await 2027 completion

Three months after the last inspection of the La General Hospital construction site in July, activity has increased noticeably, offering fresh hope to residents who have been waiting years for the facility to reopen.

Engineers and construction workers were carrying out tasks across several areas of the site when 3News visited on Wednesday, October 21.

The hospital has been unavailable to communities including La, Teshie and Nungua since the original building was demolished in 2020. Its absence has increased pressure on other hospitals across the Greater Accra Region and raised expectations for a modern replacement capable of meeting local healthcare needs.

Work is currently progressing on several parts of the new facility. On the ground floor, construction teams were working on the emergency unit, consulting rooms and nursing stations, alongside masonry work.

Kwadwo Adu Gyamfi, a project officer from the Ministry of Health, said partitioning and block work had begun on the first floor as the project moved into another phase.

“We are doing the partition and block work for the first floor. We have zoned them into three and we hope to finish within schedule for the people,” he said.

The current activity comes six years after the demolition of the old La General Hospital, which left residents without their main public hospital for an extended period.

Residents welcomed the visible progress but stressed that construction must continue at its current pace. They also called on the government to provide sufficient funding to avoid further interruptions.

Andrew said he was encouraged by what he had seen at the site.

“We can see the progress of work. We are happy and we hope they will finish in time for us,” he said.

Mawusi, a hairdresser whose business is opposite the construction site, also welcomed the development but said more financial support was needed.

“We are happy it is moving but we heard there are issues with funds. They should bring more money for us,” she said.

The new La General Hospital is scheduled to be completed and fully operational by November 2027. Once open, it is expected to improve access to healthcare, strengthen emergency response services and increase capacity for patient care.

However, residents’ expectations will depend not only on the completion of the building but also on its ability to operate effectively. The hospital will require appropriate equipment, medical staff and other essential resources before it can deliver the intended services.

The project is being funded by the Government of Ghana (GoG).
