The Western Regional Police Command is coordinating a multi-agency operation to find the fishing canoe Second Chance and its seven crew members, who have been missing since leaving Sekondi Fishing Harbour more than a week ago.
The vessel departed on 9 October for a fishing trip offshore Axim but failed to return. Its owner, Nana Kweku Atta, reported the disappearance at the Fishing Harbour Police Station in Sekondi on 18 October.
The Western Regional Marine Police Command is conducting the search alongside the Ghana Navy, the Ghana Maritime Authority (GMA), the Fisheries Commission and fishing communities along Ghana’s coast.

Police said preliminary inquiries had found that repeated efforts to contact the crew were unsuccessful. A subsequent update raised the possibility that the canoe had suffered engine failure and drifted towards Tema and the Volta coast.
However, officers said the canoe’s last known location had not been established.
The Western Naval Command, the GMA, the Fisheries Commission, coastal police stations and chief fishermen have been alerted and asked to support the operation.
The Eastern Naval Command in Tema has also been informed because of the possibility that Second Chance was carried eastwards by the sea after the reported engine problem.
Authorities are working with the agencies involved to determine where the canoe was last seen and to locate the missing crew members.
Police have appealed to fishing communities along the coast to report any sighting of Second Chance, or any information that could assist the search, to the nearest police station.
