President John Dramani Mahama has commissioned an 85-bed ward complex at the Ghana Police Hospital in Accra, as the government renews its commitment to improving healthcare for security personnel, their families and the wider public.
Speaking at the commissioning ceremony, President Mahama said the government would complete the hospital’s long-delayed expansion project. The development is expected to increase the facility’s capacity by 106 beds and provide a range of specialist services.
The planned expansion will include an Intensive Care Unit (ICU), an accident and emergency centre, surgical theatres, consulting rooms and advanced diagnostic equipment. President Mahama also announced the donation of two ambulances to improve emergency response and patient care at the hospital.
The new ward complex contains separate medical and surgical wards for male and female patients, together with dedicated paediatric wards for boys and girls. It has also been equipped with diagnostic and patient-monitoring equipment, an in-house laboratory, a pharmacy and other supporting facilities.
The Minister for the Interior, Muntaka Mohammed-Mubarak, said the project represented an investment in the welfare of personnel who risk their lives to protect the country.
He said the facility reflected the government’s focus on strengthening public institutions and ensuring that security personnel could access quality healthcare.
Mr Muntaka thanked President Mahama for his support in upgrading healthcare infrastructure and improving working conditions within the Ghana Police Service. He added that the ward would be used by police officers, their families and members of the public.
The minister described the project as an important contribution to healthcare delivery in the country.
Inspector-General of Police Christian Tetteh Yohuno also welcomed the new facility, highlighting the importance of police officers’ health and wellbeing to their ability to carry out their responsibilities effectively.
The commissioning forms part of wider efforts to develop healthcare infrastructure across the security services and provide improved medical support for those who serve and protect the nation.
Once the hospital’s expansion project is completed, the additional capacity and specialist facilities are expected to further strengthen the Ghana Police Hospital’s ability to provide care.
