New Patriotic Party (NPP) Director of Communications Dennis Miracles Aboagye has criticised the demolition of La Beach, claiming the Mahama government has created more unemployment in 20 months than any previous government did in four years.
Aboagye’s comments followed the removal of unauthorised occupants from the beachfront adjoining the Labadi Beach Hotel and La Palm Royal Beach Hotel. The demolition was justified by the Social Security and National Insurance Trust (SSNIT), which said the action was needed to protect investments belonging to Ghanaian workers and pensioners.
In a Facebook post, Aboagye said: “A government that won an election on the back of a 3-shift job system has created more unemployment in 20months than anyone did in 4 years. And they remain absolutely nonchalant about it.”
SSNIT said in a media release dated October 2, 2026, that it had requested “the urgent intervention of the National Security Council Secretariat to address the persistent unlawful occupation, encroachment, and unauthorised activities on the beachfront adjoining and directly in front of the Labadi Beach Hotel and La Palm Royal Beach Hotel.”
The Trust described the two hotels as “significant national hospitality and tourism assets” within its investment portfolio.
“SSNIT therefore has a fiduciary responsibility to safeguard these investments, preserve their value and ensure that they continue to generate sustainable returns for the benefit of contributors and pensioners under the Basic National Social Security Scheme,” it said.
“These assets belong to the workers and pensioners of Ghana.”
SSNIT identified eight main risks associated with the encroachment. These were threats to the safety and security of hotel guests and staff; unauthorised access to sensitive operational areas; fire and public-health hazards; a decline in beachfront privacy and service standards; damage to the coastal ecosystem; reputational harm to Ghana’s tourism industry; disruption to hotel operations and revenue; and the possibility that further expansion would make recovery more difficult.
“ In view of the foregoing, SSNIT requested support from National Security to protect the assets belonging to Ghanaian workers,” the statement said.
The Trust also said the beachfront would be cleaned and restored to a safe and desirable condition.
“The beaches will be cleaned and restored to a safe and desirable state and will remain open to the public,” SSNIT added.
Aboagye’s criticism focused on the employment impact of the government’s policies, as well as its handling of the La Beach demolition. He said the government had created more unemployment in two years than any government had created in four years, while his Facebook statement referred specifically to 20 months.
