Mr John Boadu has been elected National Chairman of Ghana’s New Patriotic Party (NPP), defeating Boakye Kyeremanteng Agyarko and Paul Afoko.
He won 2,888 votes, compared with 2,408 for Mr Agyarko. The fourth candidate, Sammy Crabbe, withdrew shortly before voting began and announced an alliance with Mr Boadu.
Mr Boadu is a veteran political administrator and strategist who has spent more than 30 years working within the NPP. His involvement began before the party’s formation in 1992, when he joined the Danquah-Busia Club alongside senior figures including H.E. John Kufuor, Chairman B.J. da Rocha and Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo.
He started at grassroots level as a Polling Station Chairman and later served as an NPP Polling Agent during the 1996 elections. Before the 2000 election, he trained party organisers in the Greater Accra and Volta Regions.
His subsequent rise through the party included positions as the first elected National Youth Treasurer, National Finance Officer, National Youth Organizer, Deputy National Communications Director and National Organizer. He has worked continuously at the NPP’s National Secretariat since 2001, making him its longest-serving officer there.
Mr Boadu’s most prominent national responsibilities came before the 2016 general election, during a period of internal crisis that led to the suspension of the party’s National Chairman and General Secretary.
As National Organizer, he was responsible for mobilising the party’s members. The National Executive Committee then appointed him Acting General Secretary and Director of Operations for the 2016 campaign, roles he held at the same time.
Under his leadership as General Secretary and Director of Campaign Operations and Logistics in the 2016 and 2020 elections, the NPP recorded major electoral gains. In 2016, it won 169 parliamentary seats, taking 55 from the governing NDC and securing an absolute majority.
The party also won the 2016 presidential election by more than 1 million valid votes, described in the profile as the biggest margin in the Fourth Republic. In 2020, the NPP recorded 6.7 million votes, the highest total achieved by any political party in Ghana.
Mr Boadu also oversaw the introduction of the Pink Sheet Tracking System, an IT and election-management platform that enabled the party to collate results from all 38,000 polling stations in less than 12 hours after polls closed.
He introduced the “Adopt a Polling Station and Constituency Campaign” and supervised the distribution of campaign logistics, as well as training and orientation for officers at regional, constituency and polling-station levels.
His political work has attracted international recognition from organisations including the Conservative Party of the UK, the Communist Party of China, the Christian Democratic Union (CDU) of Germany and the International Democrat Union (IDU).
On September 25, 2020, he was elected Deputy Chairman of the Democratic Union of Africa (DUA), having previously served as its Vice Chair for West Africa. He was also Secretary-General of the Organization of African Liberal Youth between 2003 and 2006.
Mr Boadu entered the chairmanship contest after consultations with the NPP’s Founding Fathers, Council of Elders, specialised organs and party activists. He has described his bid as an administrative rescue mission aimed at regrouping and reorganising the party ahead of the 2028 elections.
