New Patriotic Party (NPP) flagbearer Dr Mahamudu Bawumia says the Mahama administration is struggling to deliver many of the ambitious commitments it made to Ghanaians.
Speaking at the NPP conference in Kumasi on Saturday, October 3, Dr Bawumia said the government had still not introduced its promised 24-hour economy, including the proposed 1:3:3 shift system, almost two years after taking office.
“The government is struggling to fulfil many of the lofty promises. Youth in search of jobs flagbear 24-hour economy,” he said.
“Nearly two years have passed, and the jobs have not come or shown signs of coming.”
Dr Bawumia described Saturday’s gathering as the start of what he called a “glorious chapter” for the NPP. Delegates are electing the party’s national executives as part of preparations for the 2028 general elections.
He urged all candidates seeking positions in the party leadership to respect the outcome of the vote.
“Please accept the results in good faith,” he said.
NPP urged to challenge government
Minority Leader Alexander Afenyo-Markin called on the NPP and the Minority to scrutinise the Mahama government’s decisions without being deterred by the prospect of arrest or intimidation.
He said the party had a responsibility to hold the administration accountable.
“Let’s hold the government accountable without fear of arrest and intimidation,” Mr Afenyo-Markin said at the conference in Kumasi on Saturday, October 3.
He also expressed confidence in Dr Bawumia’s leadership, describing him as “a doer and problem solver”.
Mr Afenyo-Markin appealed to NPP members to unite behind the party’s reorganisation and support its flagbearer ahead of the 2028 elections.
“The Lord is with us; come 2028, we shall prevail,” he said.
Former President John Agyekum Kufuor, in a video message shown at the conference, said Ghanaians were yearning for the NPP to return to office.
He said the country needed the party to lead it towards prosperity and transformation.
“Ghana needs NPP to lead to prosperity and transformation,” he said.
“As we meet to pick our new crop of leaders, I want to appeal to all of you: let us, for now, select the national executive committee of the party on the careful examination to find out the sort of leadership that will enable us to regain the confidence of the people of Ghana. Let us show true respect for the idea that true sovereignty is with the people.”
Former President Akufo-Addo said the NPP would, with God’s guidance, win the 2028 election as it had done in 2000 and 2016, and form the next government under Dr Bawumia.
The NPP is holding its National Delegates Congress and elections for national officers in Kumasi. Delegates will choose the party’s next national executive team.
The party has also proposed and adopted several constitutional amendments for consideration at the congress.
