New Patriotic Party (NPP) flagbearer Dr Mahamudu Bawumia has described Saturday, October 3, as the start of a “glorious chapter” for the party as it elects national executives ahead of Ghana’s 2028 general elections.
Addressing delegates at the party’s National Delegates Congress in Kumasi, Dr Bawumia urged all candidates contesting the leadership positions to accept the outcome of the elections.
“Please accept the results in good faith,” he said.
The congress will determine the NPP’s next group of national officers, while delegates will also consider constitutional amendments proposed and adopted for discussion at the gathering.
Minority Leader Alexander Afenyo-Markin called on the NPP and the Minority to challenge the decisions of the Mahama government without being deterred by the prospect of arrest or intimidation.
He said the party had a responsibility to scrutinise the government and hold it accountable for its actions.
“Let’s hold the government accountable without fear of arrest and intimidation,” Afenyo-Markin said at the conference in Kumasi on Saturday, October 3.
He also expressed confidence in the NPP’s flagbearer, describing Dr Bawumia as “a doer and problem solver”.
Afenyo-Markin urged party members to unite behind the NPP’s reorganisation and support Dr Bawumia as the party prepares for the 2028 elections.
“The Lord is with us; come 2028, we shall prevail,” he said.
Kufuor calls for careful choice of leaders
Former President John Agyekum Kufuor said the people of Ghana were looking to the NPP to return to government and lead the country towards prosperity and transformation.
In a video message shown during the congress, he said: “Ghana needs NPP to lead to prosperity and transformation.”
He appealed to delegates to choose the party’s new national executive committee carefully, saying the leadership must be capable of restoring public confidence in the NPP.
“So, even as we meet to pick our new crop of leaders, I want to appeal to all of you: let us, for now, select the national executive committee of the party on the careful examination to find out the sort of leadership that will enable us to regain the confidence of the people of Ghana,” he said.
“Let us show true respect for the idea that true sovereignty is with the people.”
Former President Akufo-Addo also backed Dr Bawumia’s 2028 hopes, saying the party would win the election with God’s guidance, as it had done in 2000 and 2016.
“With God’s guidance, we will emerge victorious as we did in 2000 and 2016 and form the government in 2028 with Dr Bawumia,” he said.
