The maternity ward at Central Gonja District Hospital in Ghana’s Savannah Region has received essential medical equipment from GoEnergy Limited, a subsidiary of GOIL PLC, to support the treatment of mothers and newborns and improve its response to life-threatening emergencies.
The donation was made after the hospital’s maternity unit requested help in securing equipment needed to provide safer and more effective care. Central Gonja District Hospital is the only referral facility in the district and serves a growing number of patients despite having limited resources.
Among the items presented was a Mini Blood Storage Refrigerator, which will allow the hospital to keep blood safely available at temperatures between 2°C and 6°C. The equipment is expected to be particularly important during emergency transfusions, including cases involving severe postpartum haemorrhage.
GoEnergy also supplied a Cardiotocography (CTG) Monitor with Trolley. The device will enable medical staff to track foetal heart rates and uterine contractions continuously, helping them identify signs of foetal distress at an early stage and respond promptly.
The package included two delivery sets containing instruments required for safe and hygienic childbirth. A Patient Monitor was also provided to support the continuous observation of vital signs in mothers and newborns.
Oxygen Concentrators formed part of the donation as well. They will provide a steady oxygen supply to mothers and babies experiencing respiratory distress, particularly during critical and emergency situations.
Speaking at a brief presentation ceremony, GoEnergy Limited board chairman Dr Yaw Akoto said the donation reflected the company’s commitment to improving the lives of people and was consistent with the vision of His Excellency the President, John Dramani Mahama.

GoEnergy managing director Theophilus Otchere said the company would continue to cooperate with stakeholders, particularly those working in healthcare, to improve the quality of services available to patients.

Mariam Kawurbi, the hospital’s maternity ward in-charge, expressed gratitude to GoEnergy on behalf of the facility.
The hospital has continued to face shortages of medical equipment, including blood storage refrigerators. Although the facility is less than a decade old, its maternity unit does not have enough equipment to meet the needs of the increasing number of people seeking care.
Healthcare workers have previously had to manage emergencies with insufficient basic supplies, including blood pressure cuffs, CTG monitors, incubators, blood storage refrigerators and resuscitation kits. Such shortages can contribute to delayed diagnoses, untreated complications during childbirth and a greater risk of death for mothers and newborns.
Supporting global health targets
The equipment gaps at Central Gonja District Hospital are directly linked to wider efforts to improve maternal and newborn health. Target 3.1 of the United Nations Sustainable Development Goal 3 seeks to reduce the global maternal mortality ratio to fewer than 70 deaths per 100,000 live births.
Target 3.2 aims to end preventable deaths among newborns and children under the age of five.
For Central Gonja District Hospital, improving access to essential equipment will be important in ensuring that mothers and newborns receive timely, safe and high-quality care at the district’s main referral facility.
