It’s Always an Honour to Lead Ghana at the World Cup – Otto Addo

Black Stars head coach Otto Addo says it remains a “great honour” to serve Ghana on the World Cup stage as he edges closer to leading the nation to yet another qualification for the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

Addo, who featured for Ghana at their maiden World Cup in 2006, later worked as a scout during the 2014 edition in Brazil before writing his name into history books by qualifying Ghana for Qatar 2022.

Now, the 49-year-old tactician is on the verge of achieving another milestone, with Ghana sitting top of Group I with 19 points and just two matches left in the qualifying series.

“For me, it’s always an honour to work in Ghana at the World Cup,” Addo told JoySports ahead of the team’s penultimate clash against the Central African Republic in Meknès, Morocco.

“Even in 2014, I was there as a scout, so this would be my fourth appearance. It would be a great thing, surely, but there’s still a lot of work to do. We must win first before thinking about personal achievements.”

Addo stressed that his focus is on securing qualification rather than chasing individual accolades, noting that the team must remain grounded and determined through the final fixtures.

“We have to make sure that we win, and even then, it could be that we need the last game as well,” he said. “So let’s stay focused on the job and not on my personal story.”

The coach also took time to thank Ghanaians for their unwavering support throughout his tenure.

“To the millions of Ghanaians focusing on the game, I’d just like to say a big thank you for all the support, from my first game as coach to now,” he added.

Ghana take on Central African Republic on Wednesday before wrapping up their qualification campaign against Comoros on October 12 in Accra. A win in Meknès could all but seal the Black Stars’ ticket to their fifth World Cup appearance.
