The Accra Regional Police Command has arrested 39-year-old Kwame Mananyi Tuanda for allegedly using a private ambulance to traffic a significant quantity of cannabis.
Police say the arrest followed weeks of surveillance and took place on Wednesday, September 10, 2025. Officers intercepted a Hyundai Hiace private ambulance with registration number GX 277-20 near Jamboree Drinking Spot at La Maami.
According to the police, Tuanda was standing beside the vehicle when officers stopped it and claimed ownership of both the ambulance and its contents. A search uncovered several sacks filled with dried leaves believed to be cannabis.
A detailed inspection revealed 700 parcels and 473 wrappers of the suspected narcotics. Investigations suggest the substances were loaded in Kpando in the Volta North Region and transported to Accra for distribution. Tuanda reportedly admitted during interrogation that he had been in the illicit trade since last year.
Police investigations further revealed that Tuanda initially purchased the Hyundai Hiace as a regular car and later modified it with a siren before branding it as an ambulance. Prior to this, he allegedly used a Toyota Highlander for similar operations.
The ambulance has been impounded, and the exhibits have been secured as evidence. The seized substances will be forwarded to the Police Forensic Science Laboratory for analysis. Tuanda is currently being processed for court.
The Accra Regional Police Command has urged the public to desist from using legitimate service vehicles for criminal purposes and reiterated its commitment to clamping down on drug trafficking.
