Helicopter Crash: Wontumi FM Presenter Granted Bail Over Alleged False News

A Kumasi-based radio presenter with Wontumi FM, Emmanuel Kwakye Asare, has been released on bail after spending 14 days in police custody.

Asare, who was arrested on August 12, 2025, is facing a charge of offensive conduct for allegedly spreading false information intended to cause fear and panic.

The court granted him bail of GH₵100,000, with two sureties who must be civil servants. His legal team is currently working to satisfy the bail requirements. The case has been adjourned to September 1, 2025, when he is expected to make his next appearance.

The charge is linked to remarks made on his programme, in which he claimed that President John Dramani Mahama had prior knowledge of the August 6 military helicopter crash that claimed eight lives.

Although prosecutors opposed the bail application on grounds of ongoing investigations, Presiding Judge Samuel Bright Acquah ruled that there was no justification for continued detention. He referenced an earlier case in which an individual was remanded for insulting then-President Nana Akufo-Addo, noting that similar treatment would be unjustified.
