The New Patriotic Party (NPP) has cautioned that it will treat any attempt by the military to interfere in the Akwatia by-election as an act of intimidation.
Speaking at a press briefing in Accra on Wednesday, August 27, the party’s Director of Communications, Richard Ahiagbah, accused the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) of plotting to deploy security operatives under the cover of national security to intimidate voters.

Ahiagbah stressed that the Ghana Police Service has already committed 5,000 officers to secure the polls and that the Inspector General of Police had made it clear there was no need for military assistance.
Despite this, he alleged that Richard Jakpa, the newly appointed Director of Operations at the National Security Secretariat, had been moving around Akwatia with soldiers and issuing threats.
“Richard Jakpa has reportedly been moving through Akwatia with soldiers, warning some residents to leave town ahead of the by-election,” Ahiagbah alleged. He warned that any military personnel found interfering in the process would be treated “as thugs.”
The NPP called on President John Dramani Mahama, as Commander-in-Chief of the Ghana Armed Forces, to ensure that the military stays clear of the by-election and to call Mr. Jakpa to order.
Meanwhile, the NDC has pushed back strongly. Its Deputy General Secretary, Mustapha Gbande, cautioned that any violent acts during the polls would be fiercely resisted. According to him, the party would not allow intimidation or threats to derail the democratic process in Akwatia.
The by-election, set for Tuesday, September 2, is shaping up as a high-stakes contest, with both major parties trading accusations of planned voter intimidation.
