Black Queens Bag $2,000 Bonus After Quarter-Final Breakthrough at WAFCON

Ghana’s senior women’s national team, the Black Queens, have received a $2,000 cash reward from the Ministry of Sports and Recreation after securing a place in the quarter-finals of the Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON).

The Ministry praised the team’s resilience and fighting spirit, especially after a rocky start to the tournament. The Queens began their campaign with a 2-0 defeat to reigning champions South Africa, followed by a hard-fought 1-1 draw with Mali. With their hopes hanging in the balance, they stormed back in emphatic style to defeat Tanzania 4-1 in their final group game.

The win not only sealed their progression to the knockout stage but marked their first quarter-final appearance at the continental showpiece since 2016.

In a statement, the Ministry said the financial gesture was “a token of appreciation and motivation” for the team’s performance and commitment.

The Queens now shift focus to their crucial quarter-final clash against Algeria, scheduled for Saturday, August 19, with a place in the semi-finals at stake.

Ghanaians across the country have rallied behind the team, with many expressing optimism about the Queens’ chances of going even further in the tournament.
