Accra Mayor proposes dedicated welfare fund for AMA Assembly Members

The Mayor of Accra, Michael Kpakpo Allotey, has announced plans to open a dedicated account to support the welfare of Assembly Members in times of illness and personal hardship, as part of broader efforts to promote unity and solidarity within the Accra Metropolitan Assembly (AMA).

Mayor Allotey announced this on Thursday, June 26, 2025, during the First Ordinary Meeting of the Second Session of the 9th Assembly at the Omanye Aba Hall.

According to him, the initiative would ensure that members who serve the Assembly were not abandoned during difficult moments, especially when they fall ill or face unexpected crises.

“You can’t come and serve the Assembly, and later when you’re sick, then we leave you… I’m bringing a fund that will cater for Assembly Members. Every month, we will deposit some money there, so if an Assembly Member is not feeling well or is in trouble, we can take money from the fund to support him,” he said.

He requested the approval of the Presiding Member to proceed with opening the account, which would be jointly managed by five selected individuals to ensure transparency, adding that he would consult the Coordinating Director to formalise the arrangement and integrate it into the Assembly’s administrative framework.

Allotey also used the opportunity to express heartfelt appreciation to the Assembly Members and departmental heads for their support and guidance since his assumption of office.

“I have never been a Mayor before, but with your direction and the good mindset you have for the Assembly, you’ve supported me up to now,” he said, adding, “Let the unity we have continue. Even if there’s something we don’t understand, let’s talk among ourselves, because the only way we can build this Assembly is to stay together.”

He reaffirmed his commitment to open-door leadership and urged continued cooperation among stakeholders.

Touching on sanitation, the Mayor reiterated his commitment to cleanliness and environmental health, announcing that the Assembly had since January 31, 2024, assumed full responsibility for waste management in the Central Business District (CBD) following the expiration of a previous government contract.

He also used the occasion to outline his administration’s flagship programmes, including the “24-hour Clean Accra Now” project, the “Mayor’s Special Ball” for fundraising, and the “Weekend Trading Initiative” aimed at supporting urban livelihoods while keeping markets orderly.
