Non-payment of utility bills cripples CWSA

Lawra, Aug. 18, GNA- Non-payment of water bills by government departments and agencies and other institution in the Lawra township is crippling the Lawra Community Water and Sanitation Agency (CWSA).

The agencies owe the CWSA about 20 million cedis while the CWSA pays an average monthly electricity bill of five million cedis to the Volta River Authority (VRA).

Mr Gaspard Tang, Board Chairman of the Lawra CWSA said this at Lawra on Tuesday when the national board of directors of the CWSA visited there to find out their performance.

He said the non payment of bills was stifling the progress of the board and appealed to the directors to flush out all the cheats.

Mr Tang appealed to the government to assist the CWSA to pay their share of 136 million cedis to enable them embark on the Lawra town water system.

He said they had contributed about 71 million cedis out of the 136 million cedis but due to the high poverty level of the people it is difficult to get all the money.

Madam Cecilia Amoah, Chairman of the board of directors of CWSA gave the assurance that preparatory works have been commenced and the Lawra town water system would be awarded on contract for rehabilitation and expansion work in November.

She called for transparency among the board members to be able to sustain the confidence of the people. 18 Aug 04
