Ten people died in the early hours of yesterday March2 when a Toyota Hiace on which they were travelling from Keta to Accra ran into the rear of an articulated truck near Dawa on the Tema-Aflao highway.

Eight of the victims died on the sport, while the other two died on arrival at the Tema General Hospital. Only two of the victims have so far been identified.

They are Brown Kpoja, the driver of the Toyota Hiace, and Edem Amegayibor, a lotto writer from Keta. However, three others who survived the accident are on admission at the same hospital with various degrees of injury.

The station officer of the Dawa Police, Inspector T.Y. Yevugah said the articulated truck with registration number GR 3352 E loaded with 900 bags of cement, was travelling from Aflao to Ejura in the Ashanti Region.

He said at about 5:30am, the station was informed that there had been a motor accident between Dawa and Nyibenga. He said when the police got to the scene, some volunteers were already making efforts to pull out the victims. Inspector Yevugah said after pulling out the injured passengers, the police had to employ the services of some mechanics to chisel the wreckage to retrieve the dead bodies.

The Acting Medical Superintendent, Dr. Otu Tawia, said one of the injured was at the theatre undergoing surgical operation. At the accident ward, one of the survivors, Francis Anku, who is a storekeeper at the South Tongu District Assembly, said the accident occurred as a result of over speeding on the part of the driver of the Toyota Hiace.
