Tamale, March 24, GNA – Mr Albert Atutiga, Northern Regional chairman of the CPP on Wednesday, appealed to all political parties and the youth in the region to exercise restraint and tolerance and avoid any violence during the current voters’ registration exercise.
He urged the leadership of the political parties and the youth to device new campaign strategies to win more following to their camps rather than resorting to needless conflicts that had hampered government’s efforts at finding lasting peace in the region.
Mr Atutiga told the GNA in an interview in Tamale that the on-going registration exercise and some of the ensuing problems were due to political rivalry, particularly between the NDC and the NPP, which he said did not augur well for the country’s democratic process and called on the leadership of the two parties to let peace prevail in their camps.
Mr Atutiga, who is also the party’s chairman of Council of Elders in the region said the CPP was a peaceful party united in the fight to win political power and would therefore not in any way, engage in violence to create a bad image for the party. He appealed to the youth to avoid acts that would retard the development and progress of the region and forge ahead to promote peace and unity among them so that they would live in harmony.
He said: “The joy of politics is to device appropriate mechanisms to convince the electorate to win political power and rule over them when they are alive but not to kill them and rule nobody”. He appealed to the Electoral Commission as a matter of urgency, to ensure that there are adequate registration materials to facilitate the exercise.
