“We’ll get on with the job – President”, is the banner headline on the front page of the Times. The accompanying story says the President, Flt-Lt Jerry John Rawlings on Friday emphasised that the government is determined to get on with with the job of solving the fundamental problems of the country rather than to engage in squabbles. According to the Times, the President stressed that the government would not allow itself to be detracted from its duty to the people and urged the security personnel to perform their duties diligently to the nation. In another front page story the Times reports that 11 people, including two women, died on the spot when a mini-bus on which they were travelling, was involved in a head-on collision with a tipper truck at Apese, near Agomeda, on the Somanya-Dodowa road at the weekend. Twelve other passengers who received serious injuries, have been admitted at the Akosombo VRA and Atua Government Hospitals. GRI
“Police: Public has role in checking dollar craze”, is a Times front page headline whose story says the Commissioner in charge of the Police Criminal Investigations Department, Mr G.S. Aggor, has said that until the public makes the police aware of those taking foreign currencies as a medium of exchange for goods and services in the country, the police cannot act. He said the enforcement of the law is not for the police alone, “that is why the support of the public in ensuring peace and order is needed. GRI
The Times report in its inside pages that the National Union of Ghana Students (NUGS) on Friday appealed to the government to review its decision on the suspension of loans to students on study leave with pay. The paper says a statement issued in Accra by the NUGS said students on study leave with pay are contributors to the SSNIT Fund and therefore cannot be denied part of their wealth in loans. GRI
