Don’t be angry when we preach peace – Peace Council to Ghanaians

The Chairman of the Nation Peace Council, Rev. Prof. Emmanuel Asante has said he finds it very difficult to understand why some Ghanaians get worried when institutions preach peace ahead of major elections in the country.

According to him, it is a worthy course for any well-meaning Ghanaian to call for peace prior to Presidential and Parliamentary elections, as Ghana cannot afford to lose the tranquility that has always enjoyed in the country.

Ghanaians go to the polls in November in a Presidential election which promises to be keenly contested between the largest opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP) and the ruling National Democratic Congress (NDC).

As has been the tradition in election years in the past, the “peace industry” there are suddenly multiplicity of several groups and institutions that preach peace ahead of the polls.

A section of the public are not happy with the situation since they believe some of these mushroom groups that preach peace are formed in order for the leaders who have their parochial interests to solicit for funds abroad.

But speaking at the National Peace Summit organized by the Rotary Club Accra -Legon in conjunction with EIB Election Hub in Accra, Rev. Prof. Asante stated that he his outfit will support any group that has set itself to ensure a peaceful election.

“I hear that people complain that there’s too much talk on peace. I will rather talk about peace than to beat war drums, I will rather calm the hearts of people.

“As I move around I get people come and they tells us do you think things are going to be peaceful?…people are scared and we have no business doing that to our people simply because we are looking for mandate to rule and to develop. Let there be peace, I’m a man of peace, I believe in peace and will preach peace.”
