Techiman, Oct 21, GNA – The Techiman circuit court has sentenced Mohammed Ali, 21 years old and unemployed, to 30 months’ imprisonment with hard labour for stealing 21 tubers of yam.
Mohammed Ali pleaded guilty the yams that belonged to Mr. Ali Issifu of the Techiman-Sunyani station of the Ghana Private Road Transport Union (GPRTU).
Police Chief Inspector Sampson Jebuni told the court that on October 15 a witness in the case was on his tomato farm when he saw Ali with a fertilizer sack heading towards Issifu’s farm. The witness said he later saw the accused returning with the sack fully loaded sack so he challenged him.
Chief Inspector Jebuni said the accused dropped the sack and tried to bolt but the witness managed to escort him together with the yams to the police station.
Mohammed Ali confessed his guilt at the police station and pleaded for leniency.
Sentencing the accused the judge said it “is very disheartening to see young men so strong getting involved in such criminal acts.”
”If the law courts pardon such a person, farmers would be deprived of the reward of their labour.”
