Three persons confirmed dead in Adenta Adenta after hours of heavy downpour.

The Adentan Municipality in the Greater Accra Region has confirmed three casualties following a heavy downpour on Sunday, May 18, 2025.

The Municipal Chief Executive (MCE), Madam Ella Esiman Nongo, disclosed the fatalities in an interview with Accra-based Citi FM.

She asserted that the deaths occurred in Lakeside-Nanakrom and New Legon.

“In Lakeside, we lost two people, including a four-year-old girl at Nanakrom, and a gentleman around New Legon,” she stated.

However, Madam Nongo added that emergency response teams managed to rescue some residents in Ashiyie, but others remained at high risk due to poor drainage systems and haphazard settlements.

“Because people are building on waterways, there is no exit route for the water when it rains. That’s one of the main challenges we’re facing,” she said.

She therefore highlighted the urgent need for enforcement of building regulations and structural interventions to address the root causes of the perennial flooding.

“If we don’t tackle the indiscipline in our building practices and enforce the rules, these tragedies will keep recurring,” she warned.

The flooding submerged major roads and cut off access to several communities, including Weija, Kaneshie, Adabraka, Adenta-Dodowa, Tema, and adjoining towns.
