NADMO appeals to district assemblies to punish bushfire setters

Bolgatanga, Oct. 14, GNA- The National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO) in the Upper East Region on Tuesday called on district assemblies in the region to enact bye-laws that would empower traditional leaders to fine people who cause bush fires.

“The most disturbing phenomenon is the perennial devastating bush and domestic fires that degraded the fragile environment and destroyed properties and also exacerbating the food insecurity situation prevailing in the region.”

Mr Anderson Anaphor, Regional Coordinator of NADMO, said this when he addressed participants at a one-day seminar organised by NADMO for chiefs, district chief executives and heads of departments to mark the United Nations International Decade for National Disaster reduction. Mr. Anaphor explained that the International decade for disaster reduction was instituted by the United Nations to address problems of disaster in a more systematic and proactive manner than in the past. Mr Paul Allou, Special Assistant to the Regional Minister, appealed to the chiefs to intervene in local disputes and settle any differences early to avoid violence that sometimes results in burning of houses and other properties.

He said disaster could be prevented if all show concern. “Our collective effort has a lot to offer in disaster reduction and prevention.”

Mr. Allou appealed district assemblies to ensure that building plans are properly scrutinized and also conform to statutory standards before they are signed.
