Yeji disaster: Boat owner arrested

The owner of the boat that sank on Sunday, May 29 while ferrying about 70 passengers and hefty load, including livestock, on the Volta Lake, has been arrested by the police to assist with investigations.

He was arrested on Tuesday, May 31 after daring the police on radio to arrest him if he did any wrong in connection with the accident, Alive FM’s Daniel Takyi told Prince Minkah, host of the Executive Breakfast Show (EBS), on Wednesday, June 1.

The tragedy, according to reports, occurred 45 minutes away from the mainland at Yeji in the Volta Region after the overloaded boat capsized.

DSP Abraham Bansah, Yeji District Police Commander, on Monday revealed to Class FM that the main cause of the accident was overloading.

Meanwhile, the chairman of the Yeji Boat Owners Association, Noah Kwame Sarfo, has confirmed the latest death toll to be 19.
