Fight against corruption must start from the presidency – Prof Adei

Former Rector of the Ghana Institute of Management and Public Administration (GIMPA), Professor Stephen Adei, has said the nation’s efforts at fighting corruption should start right from the president’s office, members of his Cabinet, other arms of government before the citizens follow suit.

Professor Stephen Adei made the remarks on Atinka’s popular show, “Obrempong Ahyease” hosted by Mame Korea Sunday. He said the president must see to it that members of his government who engage in corruption face the full rigors of the law.

“I am not saying the president is corrupt but he must make sure corrupt members of his government are prosecuted,” the management and leadership consultant said, adding that the President has the powers to order state anti- corruption institutions to investigate and prosecute alleged corrupt officials.

Professor Adei said the rate of corruption in the country is very alarming and that the canker is jeopardizing the nation’s development. He expressed worry that, most people have accepted bribery and corruption as norms and use them to get whatever they want to be done, which should not be the case.

Professor Adei noted that corruption can effectively be tackled if the President sanctions offending public officials and allow the proper institutions to prosecute them .

He pleaded with the president to sit down and put drastic measures in place to tackle the canker , adding that serious and punitive sanctions against perpetrators will be in order
