Assemblyman, five others arrested for stealing electricity

Mr Emmanuel Amuzu, newly elected Assemblyman for Agbedrafor electoral area in the Keta District of the Volta Region, and five others have been arrested by the Police for allegedly stealing power from the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG).

Mr Amuzu’s alleged illegal activity was discovered on the eve of his swearing-in as Assemblyman for the area, a press release signed by Mr Fred Baimbill-Johnson, Volta Regional Public Relations Officer of ECG and copied to the Ghana News Agency (GNA) said.

The release said Amuzu was granted bail by the Police to attend the ceremony,

It said activities of the six suspects were noticed during a monitoring exercise by the Revenue Protection Unit of ECG to “audit the integrity” of all service connections to the Company’s customers.

The ECG said Mr Amuzu paid GHc 1,550.00 out of GHc 3,674.03 for illegally tapping power to irrigate his farm.

The other five were charged a total of GHc 14,400.00-Janet Darvordze,

The release alleged that the five illegally connected the power to their homes and to power water pumps to irrigate their farms.

It said two of the suspects paid the amounts they were surcharged in full, while the rest made part payments, and agreed on a payment plan with the Company.

The release appealed to the public to volunteer information on illegal activities of customers to help eliminate increasing incidence of power theft in the region.
