Kufuor in US for Summit

Former President John Agyekum Kufuor, left Accra last night for the United States where he will attend the upcoming summit of the United Nations (UN) in New York, as well as other meetings with other organizations on which he serves as board member.

During the UN summit, which he is attending as the UN Special Envoy on Climate Change, President Kufuor will participate in the ‘Climate Dialogue,’ which is part of deliberations towards next December’s Climate Change summit in Paris, France, where governments around the world are expected to make legally binding declarations towards the reduction of gaseous emissions into the atmosphere to limit world temperatures to below two degrees by 2030.

He will address a meeting of the African Group on the ‘Renewable Energy Initiative,’ which will look at ways in which African countries could design measures at adaptation, loss and damage control in energy production.

The former President will also address a meeting of the African Union’s New Partnership for Economic Development (NEPAD) on: “Transforming Our World: The 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development and the Importance of Climate Smart Agriculture in Achieving the SDGs in Africa.”

While in New York, former President Kufuor will attend a meeting of the Global Citizenship Panel headed by former British Prime Minister, Sir Gordon Brown, of which he is a member of the Board of Governors.

His first stop will be in Chicago where as Chairman of the John A Kufuor Foundation, he will hold talks with executives of the MacArthur Foundation, on possible ways of collaboration between the two organizations.

The former President is expected back home in the second week of October.
