Chief Imam slams media over ISIS recruitment reportage

The office of Ghana’s Chief Imam has criticized the media for exaggerating the reportage and discussions on the recruitment of some Muslim youth by terrorist group, Islamic State or ISIS.

The Chief Imam’s office is, however, worried about the development and claims it is taking steps to ensure Muslim leaders talk their youth out of possibly joining any militant group.

One more Ghanaian Muslim youth has been confirmed to have joined ISIS.

The national security has identified him as Rafiq with no further details given.

There are other reports of another woman joining the group apart from the 25-year-old graduate of the KNUST, Nazir Nortei Alema, who was reported to have joined the Islamic State early this week.

But the spokesperson of the Chief Imam Alhaji Mohammed Gado told Starr News that there has been no further confirmation that indeed these individuals have joined ISIS.

“This is a very disturbing development, but I want to believe that the media is exaggerating this … if out of 27 million…and one child has gone out don’t you think we are exaggerating the situation?,” Alhaji Gado asked.

He added: “And there has been no proof that this young man who has disappeared has actually been involved with [ISIS]”.

Meanwhile, the Chief Imam is urging Imams at various mosques to talk about the issue and educate Muslims especially, parents to prevent their children from joining any militant group.
