Behind the Mask Masquerade Gala Fighting Sickle Cell Disease in Ghana

Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia (CHOP), The Sickle Cell Foundation of Ghana, and Delightful Events by Ekua will host the Behind the Mask Masquerade Gala on July 3rd in Washington D.C. to raise funds in the effort to fight sickle cell disease in Ghana.

The Foundation is working in partnership with the Ministry of Health of Ghana and other agencies in the following:

Establishing Sickle Cell Clinics: 25 years ago, there was only one sickle cell clinic in Ghana, now there are 17; we need 30 more throughout the country;

Newborn Screening for SCD: With US help and in partnership with Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia, newborn screening for SCD was started in Ghana in 1995;more than 400,000 babies have been screened free of charge (It costs $5-$8 to screen a baby for SCD) – we need to screen 800,000 babies a year; and,
Government launched the National Newborn Screening Programme in 2010 under the Foundation’s management but, the scale-up has been slow because of inadequate funding.
