Accra, June 19, GNA – The Minority in Parliament on Thursday said it has learnt with profound sadness the sudden ailment of Chief Justice Mr Justice Edward Wiredu and recommended that the most senior Supreme Court Justice be named in an acting capacity.
A statement signed by Alhaji Muhammad Mumuni, the Minority Spokesman on Judiciary, Legal and Constitutional Affairs, noted that information on his present condition of health is sparse, as no medical bulletin has been issued on him.
“It has, however, been confirmed from reliable sources within the Judiciary that His Lordship the Chief Justice has been absent from office since 6th June, 2003 and believed to be bed-ridden following a stroke he suffered on or about 6th June 2003.”
The statement said there was public concern as the administration of justice “appears to be in a limbo this far” and it was not known when the Chief Justice would resume his public duties as the head of the Judiciary.
“While the Minority wishes His Lordship a speedy recovery, it is recommended as a matter of urgency and in accordance with Article 144(6) of the Constitution, the designation in an acting capacity, of the next most senior Supreme Court Justice.
“This will obviate any inconvenience or strictures that may be occasioned by the vacuum.”
