The Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital Burns Intensive Care Unit has advised Ghanaians to avoid unorthodox treatment for burns victims.
The Unit described as barbaric the manner in which people who suffer burns are sometimes given unprescribed treatments, including smearing their bodies with eggs, burnt snail shells, clay and other dangerous substances before being rushed to the hospital.
“When this is done, it causes systemic infection, thereby complicating treatment for the patient,” Ms Coretta Ofosuwaa, Senior Staff Nurse of the Unit, told the Ghana News Agency in Kumasi.
This was after the Glorious Praise Chorae, a non-denominational singing group, donated fruits and Ghc1, 000 to the Unit.
The gesture is to support the upkeep of the patients.
Ms Ofosuwaa cautioned parents to be careful and not allow their wards to get close to naked fires or electrical gadgets that have the tendency to harm them.
They should also adhere to fire safety measures in their homes and workplaces for their own benefit.
Mr William Kwarteng, President of the Group, assured their resolve to support patients at the Unit to enhance their treatment.
He asked the Ghana National Fire Service to team up with stakeholders to intensify public education on fire prevention.
