Private universities should develop good strategic plans

Professor William Otoo Ellis, Vice-Chancellor (VC) of the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST), has urged institutions affiliated to the university to develop vibrant institutional and academic programmes to achieve excellence.

He said the focus should not only be on making money but rather on quality education delivery.

He announced the setting up of a Liaison Committee to ensure that its affiliates did the right things and maintained high standards.

The Committee would serve as a conference to mentor them to stay on course.

The VC was speaking during the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with two institutions, Ensign College of Public Health and Akim State University, in Kumasi.

The pair is located in the Eastern Region and the agreement is meant to strengthen and facilitate the quality of their academic programmes.

Prof Ellis signed the document for KNUST, while Dr. Christopher Tetteh and Professor Mawutor Avoke, initialed for Ensign and Akim State, respectively.

The partnership would be in force for four years and under it, the institutions would run joint programmes in Information and Communication Technology, Business Administration, English Studies, Mathematics and Engineering.

Prof Ellis reminded private universities to have a charter that would guide them to become independent in future as they could not continue to depend on the KNUST for sustenance.

Prof Avoke gave the assurance that they would stay within the tenets of the MoU to achieve their aims.
