NPP accuses gov’t of inflating K’si Airport budget

General Secretary of the main opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP), Kwabena Agyepong has expressed doubt that the government actually used $29 million to rehabilitate the Kumasi Airport.

He told Adom TV Monday that: “It is not possible for government to use $29million for the resurfacing of the runway.”

“As an Engineer, I have done civil works at the airport and I know what goes into it,” the former flagbearer-aspirant said.

“The NPP is going to write and request for the details of the project. Ghanaians demand value for money and not to be short-changed,” he said.

President John Mahama and Asantehene Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, in December last year, inaugurated the refurbished airport, which the government said cost $29 million.

Operations at the airport were restricted to day time – 6am to 6pm – pending the completion of the rehabilitation.

In October last year, the Ghana Airport Company partially closed the airport to enable contractors upgrade the tarmac, install an airfield ground lighting system and upgrade other facilities.

The closure caused distress to local flights and passengers.
