Ghanaians must take interest in sanitation issues – Bani

Mr Prosper Kweku Bani, Chief of Staff, has called on Ghanaians to take interest in sanitation exercises to help address the environmental problems confronting the nation.

He said issues like environmental sanitation affecting the development of the nation had often attracted low patronage by the people.

Mr Bani said this when he joined Dr Alfred Oko Vanderpuije, Accra Metropolitan Chief Executive , in a cleanup exercise at Salaga and London markets in Ga Mashie and later to the Dansoman Last Stop where he addressed the media on the National Sanitation Day.

He said the fight to live without filth required concerted efforts and commitment by all and must not be left to the Government alone.

Mr Bani called for the intensification of civic education on the ‘importance of people’s participation in cleanup exercises and urged civil societies, the business community, and corporate institutions to support the national sanitation campaign.

He appealed to the media to devote more time to discussing environmental cleanliness.

Dr Vanderpuije condemned the apathy by some people in Accra towards the cleanup exercise saying it has the tendency of killing the initiative.

“The country’s efforts to launch and maintain environmental cleanliness would be enhanced provided everyone took the cleanup exercise in his or her community seriously,” he said.

Dr Vanderpuije said the Accra Metropolitan Assembly (AMA) was doing all it could to ensure that the waste management problems were addressed.

He urged all residents in the metropolis to register with the waste management companies to ensure that their wastes were collected regularly to prevent diseases.
