Court throws out injunction case against NPP primaries

A Fast Track High Court has dismissed an application for an interim injunction against the main opposition New Patriotic Party’s Super Delegates’ Conference scheduled for Sunday August 31, 2014.

David Hoezame of the party’s Volta regional branch filed the case in his attempt to have the event suspended. He contended that there have been several constitutional breaches by the leadership.

Hoezame argued that the party breached its own constitution in the recently held elections that produced national and regional executives.

The case was originally scheduled for September but lawyers of the NPP were granted an application for an abridgment of time to enable the court sit on the matter before the elections are held on Sunday.

Presiding Judge, Justice K.A. Ofori Atta dismissed the case Friday after Hoezame and his legal team failed to appear before the Court. The Judge said the plaintiff neither availed himself of the dispute resolution mechanisms of the party nor follow up his case in court. A cost of Ghc2,000 was awarded by the Court against Hoezame.

The August 31 conference is aimed at whittling down the number of presidential aspirants from seven to five. An Electoral College of about 800 people will take part in the Super Delegates’ Conference.

Subsequently, an Electoral College of 141,000 will elect one of the last five at a mega conference scheduled for October 18, 2014.
