Fisherman remanded on defilement charge

A Fisherman, Ekow Annang was on Thursday remanded by an Accra Circuit Court for defiling an eight year old girl.

Ekow, who pleaded not guilty to the charge, was however, remanded into police custody by the court presided over by Miss Sedinam Agbemava to reappear on August 27.

Prosecuting, Police Chief Inspector Kofi Atimbire told the court that the complainant, Senam Sasu aged 50, is a fish monger and lives at James Town.

He said the victim aged 8, lives under the same roof with the complainant, who is her mother, while the accused person, Ekow lives in the same vicinity as the complainant.

He said on July 26, at about 0400 hours, the complainant left victim and other people sleeping under the shed near the sea to fetch water.

According to the prosecution, the accused person, who saw that everybody, including the victim were asleep, quickly removed the victim’s pants and had sexual intercourse with her.

He said the victim, after the penetration, suddenly woke up and started shouting and crying.

Chief Inspector Atimbire said the accused then took to his heels but was apprehended by the neighbours and was sent to the James Town Police Station where the complaint was made.
