The Eastern Regional Coordinating Council (RCC) and Municipal and District Chief Executives (MDCEs) in the region are to meet the President’s 18-month deadline on street naming.
This came to light at a performance review meeting held by the RCC and the Municipal and District Assemblies (MDAs) at Koforidua to evaluate the work done so far at the various Municipalities and Districts in the region.
Presenting their respective performance reports, the MDCEs said they had reached an appreciable stage of the exercise with the least being at the signage stage. However, all the MDCEs complained about the challenges of accessing funding to continue the process from where they have reached since the Common Fund was delaying.
Apart from Upper West Akyem District which had just begun the process, all the remaining Municipal and District Assemblies (MDAs) in the region, in spite of the financial challenges, said they were optimistic that they would meet the September ending deadline.
Addressing the MDCEs, Ms Mavis Ama Frimpong, the Deputy Regional Minister, urged them to take the street naming exercise as a priority among their various activities for the year. She appealed to them to be more committed to the exercise by collaborating well with the Town and Country Planning officers to get technical advice.
Ms Frimpong urged all the MDCEs to follow due processes to ensure a very successful exercise. Mr Kwame Ampaben-Kyereme, the Regional Town and Country Planning Officer, appealed to MDAs to do well to consult the town planning officers in their respective areas to avoid shoddy work.
He urged them to develop the Google Maps as enshrined in the street naming guidelines and not to base the exercise on their own conveniences.
