Local government minister sacked

The Minister of Local Government and Rural Development Akwasi Oppong Fosu has been relieved of his position.

President John Mahama has, in accordance with Article 79(1) of the 1992 Constitution of Ghana, reshuffled some of his ministers resulting in the sacking of the minister.

Akwasi Oppong Fosu will be replaced by Julius Debrah, Eastern Regional Minister. It is unclear reasons for his exit and the president is not obliged to give explanations.

In the latest development, Mr. Alex Segbefia has been assigned a Deputy Minister for Defence.

Sidelined for long in the current administration, Mr. Segbefia was Deputy Chief of Staff in the late John Evans Atta Mills’ administration.

Also, Deputy Minister for Employment and Labour Relations, Antwi Boasiako-Sekyere has also been nominated as Minister for the Eastern Region.

The president has also reassigned the following to new ministerial portfolios:

1. Julius Debrah, Eastern Regional Minister is now Minister for Local Government and Rural Development.

2. Yaw Effah Baafi, Deputy Minister for Lands and Natural Resources is now Deputy Minister for Chieftaincy and Traditional Affairs.
