NDC youth in Prestea call off demonstration

Sympathisers of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) at Prestea have called off their intended demonstration following a meeting with the constituency executive.

The executive have appealed to the sympathisers to hold on with the demonstration while leaders of the party handle their grievances.

In an interview with the Ghana News Agency, the NDC Chairman for Prestea Huni/Valley, Mr Michael Gbedema, said the party faithful had genuine concerns, which include the closure of the Prestea underground mine, poor road network in Prestea area and military brutalities against illegal miners.

Mr Gbedema recalled that the Prestea underground mine, which was closed down in 2002, used to employ about 3,000 workers, but because it was currently doing surface mining, it could employ only a small workforce.

He admitted that that unfortunate situation had led to an increase in the unemployment rate at Prestea.

Mr Gbedema assured the people that the five-kilometre road from Prestea to Bogoso would soon be reconstructed.

He appealed to the party supporters and the other people in the Prestea Huni/Valley District to exercise restraint because the government would soon find a lasting solution to their grievances.
