Calm returns at Kenyasi

There is relative calm at Kenyasi, a mining community in the Asutifi North District of Brong-Ahafo Region, following a clash between Ghana Police Service and the youth in the area on Thursday April 25.

The Regional Security Council (REGSEC) has beefed up security in the town to avert any possible disturbance.

When the Ghana News Agency (GNA) visited the town at the weekend, business activities had slowed down as most of the shops were closed.

On Thursday, chaotic confrontation erupted between the youth and the police and in the process one of the youth sustained gunshot wound.

The victim is currently responding to treatment at the St Mary’s Hospital at Hwidiem.

The GNA gathered that the angry youth invaded the premises of the main police station to demand the release of one of their colleagues who is said to have impregnated the daughter of a policeman.

According to an eyewitness, the police arrested and allegedly subjected the young man to severe beatings before placing him in custody.

The police personnel on duty allegedly fired gunshot in an attempt to disperse the crowd and in the process a bullet hit one of the youth.
