The Director of Kolege High School in Darkuman-Junction in Accra, Mr. Ato Abraham, has been arrested by the Odorkor Police to assist in investigations.
His arrest, according to the Greater Accra Regional Public Relations Officer (PRO) of the Ghana Police Service, Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) Freeman Tettey, was necessary as a means of helping to facilitate investigations into his inability to register students from his school for the on-going West Africa Secondary School Certificate Examination (WASSCE).
DSP Freeman Tettey who confirmed Mr. Abraham’s arrest to Today in a telephone interview said he [Mr. Abraham] would be processed for court.
He [Ato Abraham] is currently in police custody assisting the police with investigations…,” DSP Tettey disclosed.
Mr. Ato Abraham’s arrest follows a series of spontaneous demolitions by students of his school when they realised they cannot sit for the annual West Africa examination.
The students apart from destroying items in the director and headmaster’s office and crashing sliding doors and windows in the school also set ablaze the director’s Opel Astra Estate salon car that was parked on the compound at the time of the incident.
Meanwhile three days after the incident, the damage could still be seen by visitors to the school as nothing had virtually changed.
As Today approached the entrance of the school, our reporter cited police personnel sitting before the entrance to prevent reactionary attacks by the students.
There were also an appreciable number of police personnel on the school compound protecting the remaining school properties.
Despite the desolation in the once examination centre, the WASSCE was progressing in nearby Wesley Grammar School where our reporter visited.
Here, the Headmistress of the school, Mrs. Vida Agyapong, told Today that her school had not experienced any hitches since the beginning of the examination.
“We’ve not had any challenges and there haven’t been any malpractices since the beginning of the WASSCE…,” she said.
To ensure that the examination progressed smoothly, she indicated that her school was making use of 20 classrooms in addition to its Assembly Hall.
This, she said, was done to accommodate the 1021 registered candidates of the school.
