Ghanaians abroad urged to sponsor children from deprived communities

The Okyenhene, Osagyefo Amoatia Ofori Panin II, has appealed to Ghanaians abroad to adopt children from deprived communities in Ghana in order to assist them further their education and general development.

Osagyefo Amoatia Ofori Panin II, said that national reconstruction should be the collective responsibility of all Ghanaians and should not be borne by government alone.

He said, “it is the moral and social responsibility of all sons and daughters of the motherland resident abroad to give something back either as individuals or collectively through their community associations for the socio-economic transformation of the country”.

The Okyenhene made these observations during a reception held in his honour by Mr Kwabena Baah-Duodu, Deputy High Commissioner while in transit in London from an official visit to the United States. The occasion also provided Osagyefo with an opportunity to interact with citizens of Akyem Abuakwa domiciled in the UK.

Okyenhene, who was accompanied by Hon. Fred Ofori Atta Asante, a member of the Council of State; Osabarima Awuah Kotoko II , Begorohene and Benkumhene of Akyem Abuakwa; Dr. Jones Ofori Atta, a royal of Akyem Abuakwa and Chairman of the Volta River Authority and his linguist Okyeame Asumeng Boadu, expressed his appreciation to the members of staff of the Ghana High Commission for the courtesies extended to him and his entourage.

Nana Awuah kotoko II described Osagyefo’s trip to the USA which took him to over five states as very successful. While in the US, Osagyefo held fruitful discussions with Mr Kofi Annan, the UN Secretary-General and interacted with citizens of Akyem Abuakwa living in America.

He further urged members of the Akyem Abuakwa Community Associations to avoid petty squabbles and other divisive tendencies and forge a stronger and united front towards the development of Okyeman and Ghana as a whole.

Among dignitaries present at the reception were H.E Mr. Isaac Osei, Ghana’s High Commissioner to the UK; Honourable Paul Boateng, a member of the British Cabinet; Nana Isaac Kofi Amoah, Kyidomhene of Osino and President of Akim Abuakwa Susubiribi Association in the UK; Mr. Jacob Owusu Frimpong, Chairman of the Begoro Citizens Association in the UK and some senior officials of the Ghana High Commission.
