The UNAIDS Inter-Agency Task Team on Education (IATT), UNESCO and the Association of African Universities (AAU), will organise a symposium on HIV and AIDS for tertiary institutions in Africa in Ghana.
The event will be hosted by the AAU, a member of IATT under the main theme: “HIV Education Policy Development and Implementation in Higher Education Institutions”.
These are contained in a statement issued by the AAU Secretariat, copied to the Ghana news Agency, (GNA) on Thursday.
It said the gathering would address a wide range of issues concerning students and education staff, such as HIV education curriculum and teaching methods, access to services and products for prevention, treatment, care and support in the school community.
The rest are reaching key populations in tertiary education and HIV as an academic subject, including research and evaluation.
The statement said through the symposium, the UNAIDS Inter-Agency Task Team on Education and partners would seek to explore issues and good practices regarding HIV in tertiary educational settings.
It said that the approach would include presentations with plenary discussions where participation of IATT members as speakers and participants, along with other participants from the host country Ghana and beyond would give a programmatic focus to the IATT, including stakeholders like civil society organisations, bi-lateral governments, and multi-lateral agencies.
The AAU developed its HIV/AIDS Core Programme in 2002 to be rolled out in phases as a multi-disciplinary programme that comprehensively addresses major aspects of the AIDS pandemic in African higher education institutions.
The programme seeks to ensure that tertiary education institutions in Africa continue to contribute to the production of qualified, healthy and productive graduates for the world of work in support of Africa’s development agenda.
