Mother sets ablaze daughter’s belongings

Miss Samiratu Adams, a 19-year-old Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE) candidate in Prampram in the Ningo-Prampram District, has reported her mother to the Domestic Violence and Victim Support Unit (DOVVSU) of the Police, for burning her properties.

Aisha Amadu, 34, allegedly set her daughter’s properties on fire, for resisting her attempts to send her (daughter) to her father in the Afram Plains.

Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) Rebecca Nyamah, Tema Co-ordinator of DOVVSU, told the Ghana News Agency on Friday that, the Prampram DOVVSU Office received a report from the victim that her mother has burnt her belongings.

DSP Nyamah said, because of the impending examination, the victim studied after classes and got home later.

DSP Nyamah said though the victim explained the situation to her mother, she planned to send Adam to her father, though she pleaded to be allowed to write the examination.

DSP Nyamah said Adams packed her belongings on Wednesday with the intention to stay with a friend to enable her write the BECE before leaving for the Afram Plains.

DSP Nyamah said the mother decided to send Adams to the father by force, and the victim reported the case to the headmaster of the Prampram D/A Basic ‘B’ JHS, her school.

The mother ignored the plea of the headmaster to allow Adams write her examination, but rather set the victim’s belongings ablaze.

DSP Nyamah said a co-tenant who saw the suspect burning the items, retrieved a bible, two novels and Aki-Ola English text book.

The DOVVSU official said, the suspect who in her caution statement admitted burning the items, would appear before court on Monday, April 16.

The victim is being housed by the Unit to enable her to write the examination, DSP Nyamah said.**
