Mr Mark Amoako Dompreh, Akuapem South Municipal Chief Executive (MCE) on Tuesday urged parents and guardians to invest their earnings in educating their female children, instead of exploiting their labour or giving them up in early marriages.
He said women have the capacity to make tremendous contribution towards developmental projects, and therefore should not be left out in education.
Speaking at the inaugural ceremony of the Board of Governors of Nsaba Diaspora Girls’ Senior High School (SHS) at Obodan in the Eastern Region, Mr Dompreh said Ghanaian girls are equally as good as boys in any field.
He said girls are most often entrusted with the responsibilities of higher positions in the country.
Mr Dompreh said the assembly is supporting two needy but brilliant girls at St Martins Senior High School at Adoagyiri with GH¢1,000 each year.
The MCE said although the school lacks water, teachers, electricity supply and staff bungalows it recorded 97.3 per cent pass in the last West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE).
Ms Emilia Amartey Quarcoo Headmistress, commended the Ghana Education Trust Fund, for the construction of a six-unit classroom block, two blocks of four- unit staff bungalow, and a student dormitory, expected to be completed by August this year.
She said the school performed well in the 2011 WASSCE with a 100 per cent pass in Christian Religious Studies, History, Clothing and Textiles and Management in Living, with a 97.44 per cent pass in English Language and Social Studies, 95 per cent in Biology, 69. 57 per cent in Economics and 53 per cent in Integrated Science.
Ms Emilia added that the school enrolled a total of 254 students in 2012 which had been the highest number so far.
The new board of governors for the school included Ms Andriana Kandilige, Eastern Regional Director of Education, Mrs Stella Nanor, Akuapem South Municipal Director, Ms Emilia Amele Amartey- Quarcoo, Headmistress Nsaba Diaspora Girls SHS, Mr Philip Osafo Asamoah Parent-Teacher Association representative and Mr Nii Bashiru Charway, Teaching Staff representative.
The rest are Mr Albert Essiam, Non-Teaching Staff representative, Nana Gyanwaa Sekyiwa Ofori, Odikro of Obodan, Mr Samuel Gamson and Mr Paul Baguor representatives of the assembly, Ms Mary Sahsah Old Students’ representative and Madam Juliana Osei representative of the founder of the school.**
