Relief items gone missing at Bunkpurugu, two arrested

Tamale, Aug. 30, GNA – Some quantities of relief items recently donated by the Government to victims of the Nakpanduri police operations in the Bunkpurugu/Yunyoo District have allegedly been stolen by two people.

Simon Nyunmon and one David, both Assemblymen in the area, who are among the twelve-member committee set up to distribute the items, were arrested by the Bunkpurugu Police command for allegedly stealing six packets of roofing sheets.

It would be recalled that three weeks ago, the Minister of Interior Dr Benjamin Kombour and the Northern Regional Minister on behalf of the Government donated quantities of relief items to residents of Nakpanduri who were affected by a security operation aimed at arresting Johnson Kombian, a notorious fugitive.

The donated items were stored at the chief palace while a committee was empanelled to see to it that the items were fairly distributed to the right people.

Confirming the incident to the GNA, Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) Michael Zah, the District Police Commander, said the two were arrested and granted bail while investigation continues.

ASP Zah who is also a member of the committee, said he discovered that some of the relief items particularly the roofing sheets were missing and commenced investigations together with other security agencies and they managed to retrieve 21 packets of roofing sheets concealed in a room.

He said the two Assemblymen claimed ownership and said those items had been set aside for development projects, a decision which is contrary to the reason for donating the relief items.
