Two slain policemen to be honoured

The Mampong District Security Committee (DISEC) is collaborating with the Police Administration to honour two police officers killed by robbers whilst on duty at the Otuasekan Rural Bank at Asante-Mampong, 10 years ago.

The deceased, Corporal William Kusi and Constable Paul Awere, of the Mampong District Police Command, were gunned down at close range during a raid on the bank on October 11, 2001.

The act of the robbers was an apparent vengeance for the killing of one of their colleagues by the police in Kumasi.

Mr Daniel Appau Ohyeaman, the Municipal Chief Executive, (MCE) said fitting monuments would be erected at a vantage point in the municipality to their memory in recognition of their heroic deed.

The MCE said this when he accompanied the Ashanti Regional Minister, Dr Kwaku Agyemang-Mensah, to pay a courtesy call on the Asante-Mamponghene, Daasebre Osei Bonsu II, at his Palace.

The Minister was in the municipality on a working visit to acquaint himself with the socio-economic challenges facing the people and inspect on-going development projects.

Mr Ohyeaman said he was confident that the honour would be an inspiration not only to the police but all public officers.

Daasebre Osei Bonsu said that the Council was worried by the delay in honouring the deceased who put up extraordinary bravery on the day of the robbery attack.

He appealed to the Ghana Health Service to speed up efforts at finding a replacement for the Medical Superintendent of the Mampong Government Hospital, now on transfer.

Dr Agyemang-Mensah said the government recognized traditional rulers as key partners in the nation’s development and would continue to work with them to move the country forward.
